A useful PEM electrolyzer price starts with a defined equipment scope. A bare stack, an integrated hydrogen generator and a site-ready installation include different equipment and responsibilities. Compare the proposed configuration before using a headline price for budgeting.
This guide explains the inputs that affect a quotation for a research purchase, an OEM stack project or an industrial system. It does not publish a universal market price or promise a particular hydrogen-production cost.
Review the product range · Compare quotations on the same basis · Request a scoped quotation
1. Define which equipment you are purchasing
PEM stack: the electrochemical module for integration into a larger system. Its quotation needs electrical, fluid, mechanical and operating interfaces. Confirm who supplies the DC source, water circuit, cooling, gas treatment, controls and safety systems.
Complete system: an equipment package whose included auxiliaries must be listed. Packaging as a cabinet, skid or container does not by itself establish that compression, storage, site utilities, installation or commissioning are included.
Start with our PEM stack range or PEM system range. For a small research project, review the 0.6 Nm³/h system reference and confirm its actual configuration with the team.
2. Understand the main quotation components
| Component | What can change the offer | What the buyer should request |
|---|---|---|
| Stack and operating duty | Output, pressure, duty profile, module arrangement and interface requirements | Selected model and agreed operating point |
| Electrical package | Rectifier, supply conditions, protection, controls and auxiliary loads | AC/DC boundary and included electrical equipment |
| Water and cooling | Water treatment, circulation, heat removal and site services | Included equipment and purchaser-supplied utilities |
| Gas delivery | Separation, drying, purification, pressure regulation, compression and storage | Gas specification and delivery-point boundary |
| Enclosure and installation | Cabinet, skid, container, environment, access and site work | Drawings, installation scope and exclusions |
| Engineering and acceptance | Custom interfaces, drawings, test programme and documentation | Engineering deliverables and FAT requirements |
| Delivery and support | Packing, shipment basis, commissioning, training and spare parts | Separate commercial and service line items |
3. Keep equipment price, installed budget and running cost separate
An equipment quotation covers the items explicitly supplied. An installed project budget may also need site electrical work, water and cooling services, ventilation, downstream gas equipment, installation, approvals and commissioning. Identify who estimates and supplies each item.
For operating-cost comparisons, use model-specific energy consumption at a stated operating point and a clear electrical boundary. Electricity cost per unit of hydrogen can be estimated from specific electricity consumption multiplied by the applicable electricity price, using consistent gas-volume or mass units. Record the assumptions rather than presenting the estimate as a measured result.
Maintenance, consumables, replacement parts, degradation, downtime and financing assumptions require separate inputs. A generic lifecycle figure should not substitute for project-specific data.
4. Prepare the minimum information for an initial quote
- Company or institution, application and destination.
- Stack or complete-system requirement; preferred model if known.
- Required hydrogen output, reference conditions, peak demand and operating hours.
- Delivered purity or impurity requirements, moisture condition and pressure.
- Available power, water, cooling and installation conditions.
- Quantity, project stage, target delivery and documentation requirements.
If some values are unknown, explain the intended experiment or process. An initial configuration review can identify the missing inputs. A budgetary estimate should list its assumptions; a firm offer needs the agreed technical and commercial scope.
Questions about PEM electrolyzer pricing
Can two units with the same output have different prices?
Yes. Gas conditioning, pressure, utilities, controls, enclosure, test requirements and support scope can differ. Compare those items before comparing totals.
Is a stack price comparable to a system price?
Only after accounting for the auxiliary equipment, engineering and integration responsibilities required to reach the same delivery boundary.
Can a published cost per kW be used as a quotation?
Use it only with its source date, currency, scale, electrical basis and supplied scope understood. It does not establish the price of a selected HELE configuration.
